Most of us are spiritual by nature.
We wonder if there is a God. We ponder the reason for our existence.
We desire for there to be something "bigger" than ourselves.
In the midst of our busy lives, however, these pressing questions of the mind and the soul are easily forgotten or ignored. You and I instead choose to occupy ourselves with mundane tasks and thoughts.
Why?
Because as humans, we prefer safe places. Comfortable places. Familiar places. Places...where we are ultimately in control.
The problem is that God is rarely found in such places.
Soon my wife and I are moving to the desert. The desert, I imagine, can be a wild place. A place where one must seek all the harder to quench their thirst. A place better suited for those unafraid to step outside of their comfort zone. A place where companions are needed to survive and to thrive. A place where issues of life and death are more relevant.
To be honest, I can't imagine anything more fulfilling or frightening than trying to encounter God on God's native turf.
My goal during this desert time is to seek God without fear. This means asking tough questions, truly listening to the viewpoint of others, and continuing the pursuit even if it leads me into unfamiliar and uncomfortable places.
Perhaps you'd like to join me for the journey?
It won't always be easy.
But I believe it will always be worth it.
Peace,
Jay
